2002 International Boer Goat Assn
Unofficial National Show Results
July 5-7, 2002

There is a building 521 miles east of my office named the Paul Battle Exhibition Center. It is a very serviceable venue for goat shows. The International Boer Goat Association national show held there last year was so successful that the site was selected again for this year's show. The fact that the famous Tunica, MS, casinos are all within a 10 minute drive doesn't hurt the center's appeal, either.

This national show, as with the two previous International annual events that I've attended, was most notable for it's relaxed atmosphere. The exhibitors and officials of the show were actually civil to each other. Complaints were limited to those few instances when the blow dryers popped the circuit breakers and the quickly rectified limited fitting areas. Oh, yeah... the facilities for obtaining water for the goats and disposing of soiled water were limited and remote from the pens.

Friday morning started with a fitting demonstration presented by Johnnie Ford of Double Hill Farms. Friday morning - before the show - before folks had a chance to do it wrong on their own goats - goats that were going to be shown during the next few days. I'm certain that more than one bad fitting job was avoided because of Johnnie's presentation. This excellent timing was typical of the entire event.

There were seminars on performance testing, the National Scrapie Eradication Program, and breeding stock selection.

Then came the Youth Showmanship classes. Each of the contestants was counciled by the judge and each learned something about their presentation.

Stick Goat Race
The final event of the morning was the Youth Stick Goat Race... Do you remember the "stick" horse you had as a kid? Well, it's the same principal except these kids (2 legged) fashioned the heads to look like boer goats. The idea was for each kid to ride his stick goat across the arena and back (twice for the older kids) and be the first to cross the finish line. A good time was had by all! The kids struggled and the adults were entertained. These youngsters really did well in their designs... There were a pair of twin goats, two goats with tattoos, one with an ear tag, and even one that was a complete goat the size of the stick - painted red, white and blue! The stick goats were auctioned after the annual meeting and dinner (more on the auction later).

The afternoon was dedicated to the Percentage Boer Doe Show.

Saturday morning featured a demonstration of the 'GoatMaster' working/tattooing chute, a talk on reproductive management and...

Goat Scramble The Youth Goat Scramble.
Now this, my friends, is a sight to see! Frightened goats and ready youngsters. Thanks to Terry Hankins for delivering the extra goats - it was close there for a while. The goats in the photo seem to be saying "What has Terry gotten us into"?

Late morning and Saturday afternoon brought the Fullblood/Purebred Boer Doe competition.
The Boer does in this show were awesome! There are a lot of things that I never want to do in my life but the list is topped by "be a goat judge". Just how the heck did these guys (Don Smith, Pat Ariaz, and Preston Farris) find enough differences in the top goats to place them? Sure, there were clear winners in a couple of the classes but the championship rounds were packed with quality!

The annual membership meeting and dinner was held Saturday evening in a meeting room of the Gold Strike Hotel & Casino. The atmosphere of the meeting, as expected, was relaxed and friendly. Awards and recognitions were presented and upcoming issues were discussed. Then came a really nice buffet style sit down dinner. Good food and plenty of it (last year's dinner was marred by a shortage of food).
The highlight of the evening, though, was the auctioning of the "stick" goats to benefit the association Youth Program. The bidding was spirited to say the least with more than one instance of bids being "bumped" by a hundred dollars. The high selling "buck" went to John Edwards who will sell semen straws and breeding. Perhaps a crossing of his stick goat genetics with those from my invisible goat will prove advantageous.

A few hours at the tables and slot machines followed by a couple of hours sleep prepared everyone for the fullblood/purebred Boer Buck competition the next day.

KLS Boer Goats and boergoats.com will be back next year! This is an event that everyone should attend even if they do not qualify to exhibit (Each registry, logically, limits exhibition in their national shows to members of that registry). The atmosphere, education, and goats (not to mention the casinos) make this a *must* event. Thanks to the event staff and the officers and directors of the International Boer Goat Association for putting on a fine show!

A sad note... several breeders were forced to leave early. Their homes and ranches located in central Texas were threatened by floods. We wish them well.
