Perspective Kent Davidson OMGA President Another month has past and fall is here. We went from a strange
spring and summer to a colder than normal start of fall.
We had a very long, but good September meeting at the Bob Evans
Tech Center. The 2004 schedule of shows and events were locked in and committees
were formed. It’s great to get some new people involved in bringing new ideas
and enthusiasm to the meetings. The calendar of events for 2004 will be in next
month’s newsletter. For now you can check them out on the OMGA’s
website. The Fall Classic show is behind us now with the effort of a great
crew, it was a success. I can’t give enough praise to everyone who worked so
hard on the show and the sale. First I would like to thank Karen Beamer and Gary Bibler, two of
our committee members, both putting in many, many hours doing countless jobs
before and after the show and sale. Rodney and Lorinda Reeves, two more of our
committee members who worked in the planning stages, in the wether show and in
the staging area for the sanctioned show. Thank you to Mike Borsch who worked
the wether scales and to John Morrow who again did a wonderful job as ringman
for the show, and for the Bred Doe sale. Pam Borsch as always did a very
professional job on the microphone as our show announcer. My daughter Sam,
father Walter and Karen’s dad Don, all put time in on set up and clean up. My
mother Von for making the trophies and all the great sponsor’s that help fund
and make the shows possible. My daughter, Amanda for all her work on the
computer and at check-in. A big heartfelt thank you to all of you.
We also had OMGA’s first Bred Doe Sale. The sale was also a big
success in no small part on the efforts of these people. Our auctioneer; Steve
George, who worked hard to get the best price for the consignors, but also make
it fun to keep people coming back. Thanks to our friend; ringman, Ron Young (a
sheep producer) who after the sale seemed very interested in learning more about
Boers. Thank you Julie Logan and her sister Amy for keeping things straight at
the buyers table. A very special thank-you to our friends, Dan & Chris Erwin
and daughter Jacci, for volunteering their time to ring the sale and run the
sale table, we value their friendship. Of course we would not have had a sale
without the consignors that brought a great set of animals ant the wonderful
buyers that took them home. Finally, I want to thank Amy who put in an
extraordinary about of time, enthusiasm, and sweat to make everything come
together and run smoothly. That’s one of the reason’s I love her.
Thanks again to everyone. PS – If I forgot anyone that helped, it’s not because your help
wasn’t appreciated, it’s because I’m an insensitive get. OMGA News and
Reminders October
Meeting – The monthly meeting is October
19, at the Bob Evans Tech Center.
This is located off I-270 at SR 23/High Street Exit in Columbus (this is the SR
23 on the South side of Columbus). Go North on High Street past the Bob Evan's
Restaurant, make a right at Skyline Chili and go down to the Bob Evan's Tech
Center to the main doors. The meeting will be at our usual time 12:30
p.m. Seminar/Symposium –
The OMGA is planning a seminar/symposium for December 13. The
details are still being worked out and speakers are being confirmed. Keep an eye
on the newsletter for upcoming details. OMGA Bred Boer
Sale The first Bred Boer Doe Sale was
held October 4, 2003 and went over extremely well. The sale was held after the
OMGA’s Fall Classic Boer Goat Show. A July 25 entry deadline was set to give
enough time to design and distribute sale catalogs. Fifty-six head of Percentage and
Fullblood/Purebred does and Fullblood bucks were entered. Steve George of
Deshler, Ohio was the auctioneer, selling goats from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania
and Texas. Twenty Percentage does went through
the salering. Raining Acorn Ranch of Indiana had the high selling Percentage doe
going to Richard Wilson of Ohio for $475. The percentage does averaged $278 a
head. Two bucks sold for an average of
$612. The high selling buck was consigned by Davidson Livestock of Ohio and went
to Pine Bank Farm of Ohio for $825. The Fullblood does brought the most
attention. High selling honors went to Schafer Farms, Texas on a Fullblood doe
going to Able Acres, Indiana for $2200. The 25 Fullblood does averaged a very
nice $797. Making a $568 average on the whole sale. Fall Classic Boer Goat
Show The OMGA Fall Classic
Boer Goat show was held on October 4. This ABGA sanctioned show was judged by
Preston Faris of Texas. There were 193 entries in the breeding show with
consignors coming from Il, OH, MI, PA and IN. The wether show had a strong set
of entries and forty wethers competed for the grand prize of five hundred
dollars. The show results are included in this newsletter at the very end.
Congratulations to everyone. It was nice to see that we had a lot of interest in
the show. A big thank you to our sponsors for
the show. Fall Classic Show Sponsor’s Junior Champion

Corner Amy
Davidson I’m
sorry this newsletter is a little late this month. Kent thanked everyone I could
think of for our Fall Classic Show and Bred Boer Doe Sale. I do want to thank my
husband for working behind the scenes. We have helped with the shows but this
was the first time we ran one. They do take a lot of time and energy. Our
committee (Karen, Gary, Lorinda and Rodney) were great and the OMGA members are
wonderful for pitching in. Thanks
Mary for the energy food on show day. This is the last Ohio show of the season.
It’s on to Louisville, KY for some of us.This is always a good time, but it
always seems like it is snowing by the time we come home. I will put the list of
upcoming events in next month’s newsletter. We have some exciting things planned
for 2004. By next month Fall kidding should have started, and maybe finished.
It’s hard to believe that it’s that time of the year. 2003 Meat Goat Events November 20 - North American International Livestock Exposition
Open Boer Show – Louisville, KY We will gladly add any event
that will benefit our meat goat breeders and industry. Please report any events
pertaining to the meat goat industry to the newsletter editor. 2003 Junior Fair Results
